A custom-made counter cart for a merchant's shop, commissioned by a wealthy merchant of Etchu Province, featuring beautiful zelkova burl and red lacquer.
Crafted in Etchu Province (present-day coastal Niigata and Sado), which prospered through trade with the Kitamae ships, this rare cart has been carefully passed down through generations in an old family home in the Kanto region.
◆Zelkova Burl and Red Lacquer
The sliding doors and drawer fronts are made from "burl," which can only be obtained from massive zelkova trees. The swirling wood grain stands out in three dimensions against the glossy red lacquer, creating a striking contrast with the hand-forged black iron hardware.
◆Hidden Double Drawer
Sliding the door reveals a small drawer that is not visible from the outside. Originally designed as a security feature, it can now be used to hide valuables or important items.
◆For Modern Living
Its imposing form, featuring built-in wheels in an "inner cart" design, makes it a stunning addition not only to Japanese-style rooms, but also to living rooms, entryways, or as a gallery console. Simply placing a single-flower vase or a vessel on the top will give the space a refined, polished look.
*As natural wood is used, small scratches or knots inherent to the material may be present.
We kindly ask for your understanding that these are the unique characteristics of natural materials.
