Due to the technical limitations of white lacquer, a traditional technique using eggshell was incorporated to delicately render the form of the white horse. The brilliance and texture of the white created by the fine details of the eggshell accentuate its quiet elegance and powerful vitality.

This past March, SAVI’s “WHITE PEACOCK” was sold at auction at Christie’s. Building on that success, the Chinese Zodiac, rooted in Japanese culture, was chosen as a new theme, layering original techniques and a contemporary aesthetic onto traditional maki-e.

WHITE HORSE is a work that discovers new forms of expression in Japan’s inherited traditional crafts and passes their beauty on to the future.
